Beautiful, ecologically rich and dynamic – the Islas y Canales Verdes del Rio Uruguay (Green Islands and Channels of the Uruguay River) preserve is a binational “waterscape” unique in South America.
With a network of 25 islands along the Uruguay River – the border between Argentina and Uruguay – this park offers the chance to enjoy, learn about and help conserve the magnificent scenic beauty and biological wealth of a part of the world that once afforded few opportunities for visitation.
Adventurous explorers on both sides of the river can kayak or canoe through semitropical gallery forest, marshes and expansive sandbars. An extraordinary blend of the terrestrial and aquatic, the park protects a rich diversity of plants and animals – including capybara, collared peccaries, forest cats, hundreds of species of birds, and thousands of species of fish.
The park extends 50 kilometers along the Uruguay River, where visitors can “step back in time” to a place that remains untouched by the region’s intensive agricultural development. Elevated pavilions, restrooms, floating docks and ramps make it possible for guests to spend a day or a week immersed in this exotic world where water and land blend seamlessly together.
The park has been envisioned, developed and managed by a coalition of organizations, including Butler Parklands, Wildlife Conservation Society, The Nature Conservancy, Banco de Bosques, Amba and the governments of Uruguay and Entre Rios, Argentina.
